Music imprints itself on the brain deeper than any other human experience. It speaks to us in a different language and arouses every emotion. It connects us all, it is a force that ignites our souls.
Alive Inside is a documentary film that follows Dan Cohen’s Music & Memory project, a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing personalized music into the lives of the elderly and infirm, thereby vastly improving their day-to-day existence.
Telling a story of hope and beauty, the film follows Dan as he discovers the power music has to “awaken” minds most others consider dormant and deteriorating. The film features Dr. Oliver Sacks, Dr. Bill Thomas and the amazing men and women dedicated to patient care.
Alive Inside premieres at New York City’s Rubin Museum as part of its annual Brainwave series. Tickets to screenings are still available HERE.

i stumbled across ‘the rough cut’ footage of henry on facebook today. i am very encouraged to see any media exposure regarding dementia in the elderly. this piece is a breath of fresh air to those of us who cherish the mentally infirmed of all ages and wish for others to understand the importance of reaching them with LOVE. thank you for bringing us this movie!
I stumbled upon the trailer for this film today. This promises to be a very eye-opening and inspiring film showcasing beautiful personalities that have been brought back to life. Oh, what the power of music can do! Please consider additional screenings in cities around the country (I live in Minneapolis, MN)!
OMG. A friend of mine posted this video on Facebook and I must say that it truly touched my heart and gave me the desire to find out more on Alive Inside documentary. I believe the documentary will be a huge success. I cannot wait for it to be released on the westcoast or even better HBO. Truly Amazing!
I am so glad to see this piece because I work with the elderly and I had a patient with dementia and alzheimer . And I would sing with my patient. And she would sing to so I know that music plays a big part in this disease. And I’m so glad that someone did a documentary on it.

This is such a worthwhile avenue to research.
I hope there is widespread release of this documentary because I would love to see the entire documentary.
This film is so moving that I had to think of Steve Jobs who brought the iPod and the love for music back to the masses. He would have loved to see the effect of his “baby” on the elderly; like the autistic boy who flourished through his iPad. Thank you so much for this film.
I really find this amazing! I live in Alabama and cannot make it to New York City for the showing. Will this be available for purchase or shown in other cities?
Amazing project. Inspiring video to date.
I live in New Zealand and wonder when I’ll get to see the full movie. Will you be selling this on iTunes?
Agree with Brandon, please post full movie somewhere we can buy it. We are eager to see the full version. We bought a couple of shuffles and so far have tried it in one of our residents with very similar reaction as Henry’s. We are very excited!
